The difference between butterfly valve and gate valve

Oct 21, 2025

Butterfly valves and gate valves have differences in definition, working principle, structure, usage effect, and usage direction.

as follows:

Definition difference: Butterfly valve is a type of valve that uses a disc type opening and closing element to rotate back and forth 90 degrees to open, close, or adjust the flow rate of the medium. A gate valve is a valve that uses a gate to connect or cut off the medium in a pipeline.

The difference in working principle: Butterfly valves open and close valves through the rotational movement of the valve plate. Gate valves achieve the purpose of opening and closing the valve by driving the valve plate vertically up and down through the valve stem.

Structural difference: Butterfly valves are mainly composed of valve body, valve stem, butterfly plate, and sealing ring. The valve body is cylindrical in shape, with a short axial length and a built-in butterfly plate. According to the structure of the gate, it can be divided into two types: wedge-shaped and parallel. Wedge gates have three structures: single gate, double gate, and elastic gate.

Difference in usage effect: Butterfly valves have a definite water flow regulation function and can be used in situations where the speed is suitable for opening. When using a gate valve, it can protect a good sealing effect. After all, the valve plate can be connected to the corresponding track. The sealing performance of butterfly valves is usually inferior to that of gate valves, especially in high-pressure applications.

Difference in usage direction: Butterfly valves have a small volume and can be used in places with limited installation space. Gate valves have excellent sealing performance and can be used in situations with high sealing requirements. Butterfly valves are suitable for non corrosive or weakly corrosive media such as water, gas, and slurry. Gate valves are suitable for high viscosity liquids, steam, and corrosive media.
