The main difference between butterfly valves and gate valves is

Aug 10, 2025

The main differences between butterfly valves and gate valves lie in their design structure, working principle, scope of application, and performance characteristics.

1、 Design structure and working principle

The opening and closing component of a butterfly valve is a disc-shaped butterfly plate that rotates around its own axis inside the valve body to achieve the purpose of opening, closing, or adjusting. The fully open and fully closed butterfly valve is usually less than 90 °.

2. Gate valve is a common type of opening and closing valve that uses a gate (or opening and closing element, where the opening and closing element is called a gate or gate, and the gate seat is called a gate seat) to connect (fully open) or cut off (fully close) the medium in the pipeline. Gate valves are not allowed to be used for flow control. During use, it is important to avoid opening the gate slightly, as erosion from high-speed flowing media can accelerate damage to the sealing surface. The gate of the gate valve operates as a lifting motion on one side perpendicular to the centerline of the gate seat channel, cutting off the medium in the pipeline like a gate.

2、 Scope of application and performance characteristics

1. Butterfly valves have a simple structure, light weight, low flow resistance, and are suitable for large-diameter valves. However, due to sealing structure and material issues, they are currently widely used in low-pressure systems (such as water system valves). Butterfly valves are generally suitable for large-diameter pipelines, with suitable speed switching and adjustment performance, and are suitable for occasions that require frequent operation and adjustment, such as urban water supply networks, sewage treatment systems, air conditioning systems, etc.

2. Gate valves have complex structures and large external dimensions, and there is relative friction between the valve seat and the valve plate, making them susceptible to damage. Gate valves have good sealing performance and low fluid resistance. They are commonly used for shut-off in pipelines that require strict sealing and do not require frequent opening and closing, such as oil pipelines and process control in chemical production.
